Philosophy

  • Happy Valley Montessori Children Centre provides a safe, clean, well-ordered, and hazard-free environment that protects children and supports their development.

  • We understand all children come from different families with different cultures and backgrounds. We believe children should be treated equally for their unique qualities.

  • We believe all children deserve a safe, caring environment to grow up and express their own thoughts, feelings and needs.

  • As adults, we are the role models of children. We believe parents and caregivers should teach and encourage children to respect themselves, others, our countries and the environment.

  • We believe playing (indoor and outdoor) is very important to children. By playing, children can learn lots and develop themselves physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.

  • We believe open communication between families and caregivers can bring better understanding for each other and for the best of the children.

  • We believe the desire to learn is inborn and that learning is a natural process. Our goal is to allow that process to unfold and that learning be enhanced. The most important thing we can teach children is that they are lovable, capable, and irreplaceable.

     - Behaviour must be stopped if it presents a clear risk of harm to oneself or others.
     - Behaviour must be stopped if it infringes on the rights of others.
     - Behaviour must be stopped if it will unnecessarily damage the environment or animals, objects,
       and materials in the environment.

  • The teacher may contact the parents/guardians to share a concern and to work together to develop a strategy to deal with the child’s difficult behaviour.

  • The professional may be contacted under the agreement of childcare provider and the parents/ guardians. If necessary, a child’s care plan will be created. The following information will be included in the care plan: child’s name, gender, age, his/her typical behaviours and the best way to handle it.

  • If all the possible strategies are used to handle unacceptable behaviour, but to no avail, the parents/guardians may be asked to remove their child from our program.

12.

Parties

On festive days and holidays, we may have a party. We will post a notice or letter in
your child’s cubby of an upcoming class party.
Birthdays are exciting and we love to celebrate with you. Please notify the teacher 2 weeks before your child’s birthday. “Goodie bags” must include age-appropriate items and are given to all children in your child’s class as they leave the center at the end of the day. Birthday celebrations are scheduled before lunch time.

  • The field trip can be canceled at the last minute due to extreme weather, lack of adult helpers, or a child who suddenly becomes ill.

  • Parents and staff will receive written notification of any updates.

  • Our emergency meeting places (muster locations) are

         1. The front yard of our daycare (In case of fire )
         2. The Richmond Public Library Brighouse Branch (in Case of Eaerhquake).

15.

Nap / Rest Time

  • In Happy Valley Montessori Children Centre, we will have our nap/rest time between 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Naptime can be a warm and relaxing time of the day for children and caregivers. Since children have different needs for rest, some may not sleep. No child will be forced to sleep but every child needs a quiet rest time. It may take several weeks to establish a routine but it is worth the effort since both staff and children enjoy the benefits.

  • Children will not be allowed to sleep with bottles. This will prevent baby bottle tooth decay and reduce the risk of ear infections.

  • No schedule pick-ups or visits during this time to disturb the resting children. If it is necessary to pick up a child at the nap/rest time, the parent needs to inform the centre ahead so the staff can make arrangements.

16.

Nutrition & food Service

  • The children will bring their own lunch. A microwave is available in Happy Valley Montessori for heating up lunches. If a child is without food for the day the parents will be contacted and asked to bring in lunch for the child.

  • Fresh fruits, yogurt, or cheese will be provided as snacks by our centre twice a day.

  • Attempting to be as environmentally friendly as possible we would like to encourage parents/guardians to pack their children’s’ lunches in reusable containers, and use reusable drink containers. We also recycle all paper, tin, glass, plastic products and tetra pack products.

  • For special occasions food will not be the focus, but rather the occasion. The policy is not designed to be overly proscriptive and on special occasions other foods are appropriate, for example, a cake may be brought from home to celebrate a birthday.

  • Water will be accessible to the children at all times, juice is not recommended, and milk is preferred from home. Cordial and soft drinks will not be allowed. The children will be offered, and encouraged to drink water during and after lunch in the interests of dental hygiene.

  • For reasons of safety, behavior and nutrition, please avoid sending the following foods; fish with bones, raw or grated carrot, nuts, chips, chocolate, chocolate and cream filled biscuits, cakes and fruit sticks. Children eat meals within a social environment; unsuitable foods can create inequality and confusion, and can be potential choking hazards.

  • Staffs must ensure that children are not forced to consume any food or drink, or left unsupervised while consuming food or drink.

  • Food and drink are not used as a form of reward or punishment for children.

17.

ACTIVE PLAY

According to the Child Care Licensing Regulation section 43, 44, and schedule G, our childcare centre will provide children with indoor and outdoor activities that encourage healthy growth and development.

  • What is Active Play?

Active Play is physical activity which includes moderate to vigorous blurts of high energy, raises children’s heart rate and may make them “huff and puff” such as running  or jumping.  For an infant or toddler, active play may include reaching out for a toy, rolling over, balancing in a sitting position and crawling/walking.

  • Why is Active Play Important?

Active play helps to promote healthy growth and development and supports body control and movement. Active play can help build strong bones and muscles, improve balance, coordination and assists with the development of gross motor and fine motor skills. Active play also helps to promote children’s confidence, improves concentration and thinking and learning skills and provides opportunities to develop social skills and make friends.

  • ACTIVE PLAY

-
Time of Active Play:

Our program ensures a minimum of 60 minutes per day of outdoor active play (indoor active play is acceptable when weather is poor). Active play may be accumulated through 15 minute portions of time throughout the day or continuously.

- Infant Active Play:

Infants are encouraged to practice sitting up; rolling over, reaching out for a toy; crawling around; pulling her/him up using the climber; clime up/down the stairs of climber; slide down from the climber; walking around with assistance; pushing toys around.

- Toddlers Active Play:

# Free play (indoor): e.g. walk around at the indoor open mat area; use the climber(stairs, slide)

# Free play (outdoor): e.g. run on the open grass area; throw/kick balls

# Adult-directed games: e.g. Follow the Leader

To begin the game, an adult is the leader. Children line up behind the leader. The leader decides the actions for children to follow. The children mimic the leader's actions. Change leaders and give every child time to lead the others.

    Begin with simple actions like:

• hand on heads • star jumps • hop on one foot • sit down • stand up

# Movement skills: e.g. Stair Practice

Take time to allow a toddler to crawl up the stairs at their own pace, Show her/him how to turn around at the top and come down feet first. A toddler may want to go through this many times, and this is fantastic exercise for them.

# Physical Literacy:

From 0-6 years, children need to be engaged in daily active play. Through play and movement, they develop the fundamental movement skills and learn how to link them together. At this stage developmentally appropriate activities will help participants feel competent and comfortable participating in a variety of fun and challenging activities and games, e.g. Playing with balls Introduce balls of all shapes and sizes. Allow the toddler to explore the balls however he wishes. Take time to sit on the floor and roll a ball back and forth with him. Show him how the balls can bounce.

# Fundamental Movement Skills: e.g. Move to music

Moving to music is also fantastic for this age. Provide opportunities to get children bouncing,
marching, and tapping to the beat of music.

  • Injury Prevention:

- Use of protective ground surfacing such as foam mat under climbing equipment, to reduce the risk of injury from falls.
Teachers show children how to be safe and act responsibly in the play space and how to correctly use toys and equipment, and to be aware of potential hazards.

18.

Screen Use Policy

  • According to the Child Care Licensing Regulation requirement, all licensed child care programs must limit screen time (TV, computer, electronic games) to 30 minutes or less a day. Screen time is not offered to children under two years of age.

19.

No Nuts Policy

  • Happy Valley Montessori Children Centre building and grounds have been designated as no nut zones due to children and staff having life threatening allergies to nuts. This means that no nuts and food containing nuts are allowed on the premises at any time. We cannot serve foods that are labeled as “may contain traces of nuts” either, so please check labels carefully before bringing food to the program.

20.

Clothing and Daily Necessities

  • Play clothing which is warm, comfortable and easy for children to handle, are necessary. They should be washable and free of any complicated fasteners, braces, buckles…etc.

  • Please keep a change of clothing in your child’s cubby at all times.

  • Please keep a pair of indoor shoes in your child’s cubby at all times.

  • In summer time, please provide your child with sunscreen and a sun hat.

  • During winter time, your child may need mittens, scarf, warm hat, and an extra pair of shoes/boots for rainy days.

  • Please label all clothing and belongings with your child’s name.

  • No jewelry or objects that may cause injury to children.

  • Please bring one box of regular sized Kleenex for your child’s own use.

  • Please provide your child with one sleeping sheet(sleeping mat cover with rubber band on the corners), a blanket and a pillow in one big plastic bag and labeled with your child’s name.
